Chieri Kubota, Ph.D.

This presentation 'Nutritional Composition of CEA Leafy Greens: A Case Study on Carotenoids of Kale Grown in Field, Greenhouse, or Indoors' was given by Dr. Neil Mattson (Cornell University) and Dr. Marianne Nyman (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) during our 21st cafe forum on August 25th, 2020.

Greenhouse vs store-bought
Cafe Participant (Sep 7th, 2020)

Do you have a full citation info for the reference where they report difference in nutrient content between greenhouse and store-bought tomato and other vegetables?

Commercially available luteins are extracted from marigolds. Do you know the kale content vs. marigolds for lutein?

How much Lutein and Zeaxanthin does one lose when eating frozen veggies high in both?

You collected dry weight of the kale plants in the study. I wonder if there were differences in dry matter percentage between field, greenhouse and growth chamber, and whether the trends are similar in nutrient content per fresh weight and nutrient content per dry weight.

In the growth chamber what wavelength(s) of light did you use to emulate natural sunlight?

While the study was designed to look at differences between the three production methods, did you look to see how nutrient concentration changes over the life cycle of the kale within the same production method?

DLI
Cafe Participant (Sep 8th, 2020)

Were the yields and DLI correlated?

DLI vs yield
Chieri Kubota (Sep 8th, 2020)

Leafy greens DLI and yields are generally correlated at the same planting density. In this particular study, planting density was higher in growth chamber and so yield comparison should be done per growing area basis (per sq meter or sq ft). Yields/area should be correlated with DLI in a range widely used in indoor production.

Taking into account the morphology issues, is there an experimental plan to repeat the study in a larger growth chamber?

To prepare the HPLC injection samples, two pumps (A and B) were mentioned. What is the reason to mix the two samples from two pumps?
